The Great Sphinx of Giza – Giza, Egypt

Following on from my post about the Pyramids visit, we also went to see the Sphinx. You’ll definitely have seen photos of this around if you follow my insta and when you think of Egypt probably one of the first images you imagine is of the Sphinx and Pyramids.

We’d previously been at the Middle Pyramid site so took a short coach journey down to the Sphinx location, which isn’t far away at all. It’s actually at the end of a ramp road built in ancient times for transporting prepared bodies from the Sphinx area up to the Pyramids!

It’s pretty impressive to see but isn’t as big as maybe you’d imagine, similar to when I saw the Statue of Liberty. It’s still an epic sight all the same. The main viewing point is from the right side… entering through the Valley Temple of Khafre which was part a mortuary temple, where ceremonies were performed to prepare the dead for burial in the Pyramids (taken up the walkway I mentioned).

When you get through the Temple you get to a walkway so you can stroll along to see down to the butt of the cat (or the sphinxter as I later hilariously named it), though most people stay by the face. It’s in amazing condition and it’s another thing I could take photos of for daiz, with the Pyramids in the background and the colour of the gawjus limestone against the blue sky… Swoon. I liked the paws. It’s a vary majestic kitty cat I must say. It was built around 2558–2532 BC, mucho impressive.

Again similarly to the Pyramids we had a lot of selfie requests and they did interrupt my own tourist photos but the gals who approached me were very sweet/excited so I obliged; one even took a secret selfie with just my legs… and no they weren’t evenly shaven… Sorry kid.

I’d have liked to been able to see the Sphinx from the front front and there was a bit of ground where that was possible, but not for the tour we were on. Ideally I’d trot off to take a look and catch up but the group we were with were in the 65+ age range and we didn’t want to mess anything up for them. I’ll come back again and check it out from the front another time. If you book in for the evening light and sound show then you’ll get a different view but we didn’t stay for that… It’s voiced by Omar Sharif and we don’t imagine it’s changed a lot since the 80s so might be good for the lols but I’m a cheapo so didn’t want to fork out! Have a little Google if you think it’s something you might enjoy, I think tickets were about £28pp GBP.

From the Sphinx you get a view of all three Pyramids, which was pretty epic. We tried to get a photo but had limited time until excited folks gathered in the background to watch the pale tourists with glee. They were super cute.

Again this is a classic and legendary sight so I’d highly recommend a visit. We were there in early November and it was hot but not unbearable so I’d say that’s a pretty good time to go too, and gives a little break from the western Europe chill and rain.

The Great Pyramids of Giza – Cairo, Egypt

Hello hello hello! We’re now (at time of posting) in lockdown stuck in our flat but at the time of writing I was in holiday in Egypt… so I thought I’d finally whap up this post to tell you about the Pyramids trip we went on. This was our first full day in Egypt and after a day of flights and a late hotel check in the night before, we were collected from the hotel lobby at 8.15am. Ouch!

We booked via Discover Egypt but the actual tour company for this excursion was Wings, in case anyone is interested. The day trip cost was included in our tour package (we had the 10 night Classic Egypt package and stayed on the MS Tulip) but you can find similar on Trip Advisor for around £50-70, which should include a visit to the Pyramids, the Sphinx and Saqqara. If you want to go inside any of the Pyramids it’s extra.
