Getting Dirty at *NEW* Dirty Bones, Shoreditch

Dirty Bones. You have been on my radar for a while but always seem to have wait lists or are booked up when I try and step through your door. I guess this is the price I pay when I try to pop in to popular places! I saw your Shoreditch opening and jumped at the chance to go!

I tried to book the first week of their soft opening just after it was announced (I needed to get there, STAT) but it was already jammed! So I settled for the second week and I was really not disappointed.

Burgermeister, das Berliner Burger – Berlin, Germany

Apparently it is widely believed that the Hamburger originated in Hamburg (hence the name), the invention of Otto Kuase who used to serve butter fried patties topped with a fried egg to sailors. There are plenty of other claims to the first Hamburger, but we like this one, and so we thought we’d take a break from the wurst and give a burger a go in the country where it was (allegedly) invented. So where better when in Berlin than Burgermeister, the go-to place in Berlin for burgers, which frequently features on best eats lists for the city. When I arrived I was amused to see the innately hip Berlin has not missed out on the trend of turning public loos into eating establishments. (Maybe it even started here? Who knows!) Boondocks Soft Opening – Old Street, London

We went to the soft opening of Boondocks, Old Street to sample what was what in this American Deep South diner. I’d heard rumours of crawfish and have read impressive things about head chef Bea Vo’s Kingly Court (near Carnaby St) place, Stax. Now opening a second restaurant in Old Street, they have more space and more potential for a larger menu and more varied dishes. So I thought I would pop down and see what was what!

Aloe aloe, Simplee Aloe!

Oh my gosh! If you hadn’t noticed, the South of England is going through a ‘heatwave’ (yes, hotter places we know you are hotter but we are the feeble English so for us 28c is a heatwave) in September. Apparently yesterday was the hottest day in September on record since 1911. Don’t say we never teach you important things here at FMPH.

Anyway, I got home after tubing and training for my commute and thought “thank the lord Jebus above I put one of my Simplee Aloe drinks in the fridge yesterday”. Honestly. I’m not even making it up for the review. And here I am drinking the thing.

Last Saturday (10 Sept ’16) we attended Slider Decider at Broadgate Circle, London, and cor we had an amazing day! Despite the rain, the 16 chefs in attendance cooked for the crowds, powered through and did a brilliant job.

We too put the ‘work’ in and sampled 14 out of the 16 sliders on offer. If you want to know what we thought, who the winners were, who we voted for and where you can see more of these chefs then keep on reading!

La ChiVa – Freeze Dried Fruit Snacks

Today we’re trying dried fruit snack packs from La ChiVa! – ‘Columbia’s second favourite export’

These are a healthy freeze dried fruit snack which you can eat on their own, sprinkle on your cereal or yogurt or possibly do other things I haven’t yet considered! I opted to try them on their own as ‘fruity crisps’ – and also because I had no cereal or yogurt in the cupboards.

Naturelly – Jelly Juice

We visited the Speciality & Fine Food Fair 2016 and stumbled upon Naturelly. These guys and gals make a jelly juice snack aimed at kids aged 2+ and made from real fruit juice and natural gelatine-free jelly with no added sugar.  The point is to have something for kids to have as a snack which is good for them and a bit different – not a snack and not a drink, a delicious in-between!

This appealed to me because although I am a 20-something *cough cough* I don’t think you ever really lose the love for a bit of jelly, especially when it’s in a squeezy packet. So I gave it a crack (and the fella on the Naturelly stand was also a jelly fan so there was no shaming for me going for a snack aimed at toddlers and over).

Basque Food – Eneko at One Aldwych – £65 a head for 3 courses 1 drink & service

Eneko officially opens Today, but we went along to the soft opening a couple of weeks ago to check the place out.  Continue reading
